Artefact
The artefact presents a physicalisation and representation of the data from this project to illustrate the trails of information according to the types of news or content and the relationship profiles of who we share this information with.
Description
The artefact consists of seven 22 x 15cm wooden planks with thumbtacks placed in a 5 by 5 grid each – with the x-axis representing the order of the trail from 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and last (left to right) and the y-axis indicating the relationship profiles in the order of Mother, Father, Siblings, Friends and Partner (top to bottom). Coloured yarn is then used to represent the trail of information of each respondent’s response. Only two colours were used for each board to show contrast in the trails for aesthetic purposes and not an indication of another data point.
The start and the ends of the trails are left raw and “unfinished” to represent how information too is unfinished. The news or content we consume all came from another source, that came from another source, that came from another source. The news we share will also be further shared with others outside our trails. The chain of communication doesn’t stop. As a result, the tangling of the trails shows the chaos that comes in communication and how it could easily intermingle but also presents a frequency, where some points only have one or two loops of the yarn, whereas others are overflowing with yarn.
